Derby Day Ride Canceled

The Miami Whitewater wooded trails are currently closed due to the recent heavy rains, and it Is improbable they will be open by Saturday, May 5 for the scheduled Derby Day ride. Therefore our OHC event is cancelled. The Shaker Trace walking and horse trails are also closed due to the flooding. Debris and mud needs cleared from certain areas and it is uncertain if that will be cleared and trails reopened by Saturday.

Hueston Woods Bridle Trail Work Day

Horse for trade, possible sale

Hi all,

Is anyone interested in trading an older broke gelding for a 5 yr old registered Paint mare? The mare is out of Magnum Fleet, a son of Mr Norfleet and has had some Clinton Anderson ground training. She is under saddle but lightly ridden. The owner is looking for a horse she can ride occasionally for an hour or so without having to do much prep. She works long hours and found out a younger, greener horse isn’t for her. I own the half brother to this mare and he is the best I’ve ever had – great disposition, intelligent, quick learner, will do anything I ask. I got him as a 4 yr old, had him riding in 2 weeks, and took him on a 3 week camping trip 2 months later where he did great.

I found out about this horse from the lady who bred both of them. She owns Magnum Fleet and she’s trying to help the owner rehome the mare.

I can get pics, answer some questions, or put you in touch with them if you have any interest.

Montgomery County OHC Guest Speakers

Monday is the day! At our Montgomery County, OHC meeting (7:00 pm, Trinity United Church of Christ, SR 35, in New Lebanon), we will have Ron Bicknell, Twin Creek/Sugarcreek Metro Park Manager as our guest. Whooopie! In addition to Ron, we will be privledged to have peronnel from Possum Creek, Sugarcreek, and Twin Creek. They will be giving updates on our parks, and ready to answer any questions you might have about the parks. Ron is familiar with all the Metro parks, and should be able to answer any question about them also.

Now, be sure you have marked your calendar and be there! This is an open meeting and everybody is welcome. Grab a friend, or just drive by a corner and pick someone up — I’m sure everybody is interested in our horse trails.

Hope to see each and everyone of you, at this very interesting meeting. Be there or be square!!!

Deam Lake Clark State Forest update

I drove thru Deam Lake yesterday and talked to the ranger there. Deam Lake is open and horse trails are ok up to where the red and orange trails meet. Then everything North including all of Clark State Forest is closed due to tornado damage.

They didn’t think it would be open this summer due to the extensive damage. He said the Mountain Grove Loop area was completely gone.

Mt. Airy Forest – Potential Site for New Trails – Action Needed

To All The Club Members From BC-OHC & HC-OHC:

Last night at our Hamilton County OHC meeting, we had the opportunity to meet with Larry Parker, Cincinnati Park Board Region Manager, concerning the bridle trails at Mt. Airy Forest and a potential opportunity. Currently the trails are open but in poor condition and very difficult to access. Mr. Parker is meeting with various horse clubs and organizations to see if there is an interest in improving the bridle trail system . The opportunity mentioned exists in the potential reprogramming of an old CCC camp that exists in Mt Airy Forest. Currently the facility is housing the Talbert House which provides social support for homeless veterans. However, they are planning to move to a new facility in about one year and that would leave the site potentially available for other uses. One of those uses could be access to Mt Airy Forest bridle trails with parking and maybe more. There are no guarantees but the equestrian community will need to show support of the bridle trails in Mt Airy Forest if there is a chance for this to happen. This is something that Mr. Parker needs to jump on as soon as these homeless veterans are moved.

What would need to happen is that we schedule a work day to go in to do some maintenance/trimming work on the trails, a possible day ride there and then also an accumulation of the different horse clubs and organizations in the local area with whom Mr. Parker could make contact. The trails are rideable but do need some trimming and trail markings in certain areas.

Mr. Parker is coming to the next Butler County OHC meeting. In the mean time, please email me contact persons for various horse groups that you are aware of in the immediate area.

The trails are actually rideable now, and Mr. Robert Biddle, Hamilton County OHC member lives in that immediate area and is offering an area where you could park your rig and access the trails from his property. I am writing to inform you that we have Mr. Dennis Heyob, President Hamilton County Ohio Farm Bureau, a Harrison area resident and farmer who grows hay secured as a speaker for the February 20th HC- OHC meeting. Michael Frederick, DVM Miamitown Pet Hospital and Vice-President Hamilton County Ohio Farm Bureau is working on clearing his schedule for that night also. The topic will be “Hay is for Horses”.

January Updates from Kathy

For those of you who did not make our meeting last night, we had a huge turnout at Bruno’s Pizza. Our next meeting in February will also be at Bruno’s (not Riverfront Cafe as originally planned because Riverfront Cafe has Trivia going on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Monday’s of the month and they get quite loud). We would love to see you come to the next meeting. We have some exciting things in store for the year 2012…our annual Sebald Park cookout, Horse Day at Sebald Park (a new event that we are in the early stages of planning), our annual Christmas party and lots of rides and opportunities for socializing.

As event planning will take place on Saturday, February 4 @ noon @ Perkins in Fairfield, Ohio. Please join us if you are able. Also, please email me with your ideas on the types of rides you would like to see, events or activities you might like, speakers, etc.

Please remember the Walt’s Restaurant Fund-raiser for our shelter fund. That is scheduled for Monday, March 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Come with an appetite. The club gets 10% of the sales excluding tax, alcohol and 1/2 price appetizers. With your attendance that evening as well as your help promoting this event, we could potentially net a decent sized profit for our shelter fund.

At our meeting last night, we had a representative from MetroParks there. One of the things that was discussed was the hang tags for 2011. PLEASE DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR HANGTAG FROM 2011. All you need to do is present that hang tag to someone at the park gateway or to MetroParks at their office and they will put an orange sticker for 2012 on your 2011 hang tag.
